EUROCHAM Malaysia was invited for a meeting with the Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul bin Tengku Aziz as part of his onboarding process. The introductory session was attended by EUROCHAM Malaysia Chairman, Mr Oliver Roche, Deputy Chairman, Mr Luciano Pezzotta and Mr Jordi Pol, Director of EUROCHAM Malaysia.

Pertinent matters were discussed, primarily the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) of which the negotiations were previously launched in 2010 but reached an impasse in 2012. EUROCHAM Malaysia expressed our vested interest in the recommencement of negotiations between the Malaysian government and the EU on the MEUFTA. To this end, EUROCHAM Malaysia has jointly formed a task force with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) to facilitate the process of reviving the dialogue with the EU.

EUROCHAM Malaysia also conveyed their sentiments about the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-pacific Partnership (CPTPP), echoing their full support for the ratification and commitment to the free trade agreement.

The manufacturing sector recorded RM158.9 billion in sales in October 2022, an increase of 12.9% year-on-year, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the double-digit growth in sales value in October was largely driven by the petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products subsector (up 23.8%).

The growth was also attributed to electrical and electronics products (16.6%), and food, beverages and tobacco products (4.6%).

Mohd Uzir said the manufacturing sector employed 2.32 million persons in October, up 3.6% from 2.24 million persons in the same month last year.
