During our visit, Mr. Andrew O'Brooks provided an enlightening presentation about MAN Truck & Bus, offering insights into the company's global and regional operations. We engaged in discussions covering a wide range of topics, including advancements in battery technology, Euro 6 diesel engines, and other pertinent automotive matters.

EUROCHAM Malaysia organised and hosted the logistics sector committee meeting consisting of key logistics industry players right at our office yesterday. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Jordi Pol, EUROCHAM Malaysia's board of directors and attended by our esteemed representatives from various logistics committees our dedicated team came together for an engaging meeting.

Our discussions delved into advocacy matters brought forth by our members, covering topics such as e-hailing regulations, their impact on licensing and driver requirements, carbon emissions reduction initiatives, talent acquisition challenges, and talent scarcity in the shipping sector. We addressed these challenges in the context of creating a sustainable supply chain, touching on areas like human resources, sustainability, and customs.

The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) is actively revisiting the Strategic Trade Act (STA) 2010, with the aim to streamline regulations, ensuring strategic goods and technology controls are tailored to specific industry segments.

Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said this review will also address any aspects of the Strategic Trade Management (STM) that might inadvertently hinder growth, including in the defence industry.

“The swift pace of technological advancements, while promising, also presents challenges. As highlighted by the research on Emerging Technologies and Trade Controls (2020), the rapid evolution of dual-use technologies underscores the need to balance technological leadership, economic competitiveness, as well as national security.

“While trade controls on these technologies can foster peace and reduce security threats, overly restrictive policies might unintentionally hamper economic growth, stifling competitiveness and innovation,” he said in his speech at the Malaysia Strategic Trade Summit (MySTS) 2023 on Monday.
